Western Healthcare Makes a ‘Greyt’ Impact on Retired Racing Greyhounds
Did you know greyhounds are the second fastest land mammal on earth, after the cheetah? Greyhounds can run up to 45 mph. Not only are these incredible canines known for their racing speed and agility, they are also known to be intelligent, loving companions. That is why the mission of Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) is to ensure ‘no grey is turned away.’
GALT, an all-volunteer 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 2001 in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, has helped more than 3,700 greyhounds – primarily those that are retired from or affiliated with the racing industry – and other sighthounds in finding their forever homes. GALT operates a four-acre kennel where the hounds are cared for while waiting to be placed in foster homes prior to adoption. Being the dog lovers we are, our team enthusiastically jumped at the chance to assist GALT’s greyhounds and staff members.
Spreading out across the grounds, the Western crew worked alongside GALT volunteers to complete a variety of indoor and outdoor tasks. These activities included bathing the dogs, painting hallways, making handmade dog toys, landscaping, and touching up facility signage.
Jennifer Cooper, GALT Volunteer Coordinator and long-time greyhound supporter, said the impact our team made exceeded her expectations.
“The difference Western Healthcare made at our kennel facility is immense. In just a few hours, their staff bathed 15 dogs, and between the landscaping, dog toy crafting, and painting, they finished work that would take our volunteers months to complete,” said Cooper. “Western’s day of service to GALT frees up our volunteers so they can focus on the dogs and their well-being while they wait for a foster home. THANK YOU on behalf of everyone here at GALT. It was a pleasure spending the day with all of you. Y’all are truly a blessing to us and the hounds!”
Thanks again to the GALT team for allowing us to lend a hand! Would you like to volunteer at the greyhound kennel? We highly recommend it! Click here to learn more about volunteering, donating, fostering, and adopting, or email GALT.
